The meaning of “Pu-in-pu-in-pose”

The “Pu-in-pu-in pose” is a pose in which you bring your fist to the side of your face and shake it up and down while saying “Buin buin.”
This pose won second place in the “Purikura Pose Category” in the “2023 First Half of Gen Z Trend Ranking,” which was compiled by Trepo, a trend media for women in their teens and twenties, based on a survey on Gen Z trends for the first half of 2023 (※1).

Origin and etymology of “Puinpuinpose”

“Buinbuin” is a popular word in Korea, but the word itself has no meaning, and is used when showing cuteness. It is spreading among the younger generation because many K-POP idols use it, but it is actually a secondary trend, and originally became popular around 2011.

The pose became popular when, during the Korean drama “High Kick 3 – Revenge of the Short Legs” that was being broadcast at the time, he made a cute “buin buin” sound while asking for something.
It is also believed that the “Buin Buin Pose” was often used by girls from Girls' Generation and KARA, who created a huge boom in Japan at the time, which was also a factor in the boom.

In Japan, “aegyō” is used in a way similar to “aegyō ga ga ga iru” (they have aegyo), and the word “aegyō” is never used on its own. However, this “aegyō” (called aegyo in Korean) is considered indispensable for K-POP idols, and there are various kinds of “aegyō”. Therefore, among Japanese fans, “aegyō” is often used slightly differently from Japanese grammar, such as “They're good at aegyo” or “They're not good at aegyo, but that's what makes them cute.”

Other classic poses include the “Koppa-chim pose,” in which both hands are opened like flowers and placed under the chin, and the “Ne-ma-um-so-ge-cho-jang” pose, in which the thumbs and index fingers of both hands form a square, which singer Park Ji-hoon performed when he was in an idol group and became a huge hit.

There are also “cuteness songs” that showcase “cuteness,” such as “Kiyomi Song” released by artist Hari in 2013.Yoja (female) idolSome of the dishes include “Oppaya,” which is said to be a classic.

Using “Pu-in-pu-in-pose”

“That XX doing the 'boing' pose is too cute”

“Maybe I should write 'Buin Buin Pose' on my fan.”

“You're not that cute normally, so please stop making all these “boing and poking around” poses.”

Among the younger generation in Korea, “Buin Buin” is also used on social media. When writing text, the emoticon “ლ( ╹◡╹ლ)” is also used.
