First overseas performance of the stage play “Attack on Titan” to be held in New York in October, says Isayama Hajime, “It's a little different”

It has been decided that the musical “Attack on Titan -the Musical-” will be performed at the New York City Center theater in New York, USA from October 11th to 13th. This will be the first overseas performance, and following on from the Japanese premiere, it will be directed by Ueki Go, with Okamiya Raimu as Eren Yeager, Takatsuki Sara as Mikasa Ackerman, Konishi Eito as Armin Arlert, Matsuda Ryo as Levi, and Ohno Takuro as Erwin Smith.

“Attack on Titan -the Musical-” was performed in Osaka and Tokyo in January 2023. Due to its high quality, including a stage production that combined the latest technology and gimmicks with analog theatrical techniques, the overwhelming presence of the Titans that appeared on stage, and a wide variety of expressions that combined music, dance, and action, word of mouth spread on social media after the opening night, and the final performance was a sold-out success.

For the New York performance, Matsuda Shota will take on the role of Jean Kirstein and Takahashi Yuri will play the role of Connie Springer. In addition, a comment has been received from original author Isayama Hajime regarding the decision to hold the New York performance.

“Attack on Titan” is based on the manga of the same name that was serialized in “Bessatsu Shonen Magazine” (Kodansha) from September 2009 to April 2021, and tells the story of humanity living within “walls” being forced into a desperate battle against “Titans” that prey on humans.

A dark fantasy in which the story unfolds around three characters: the protagonist Eren, who is a member of the Scout Regiment that fights against the Titans and longs for the outside world, the cool and beautiful fighting girl Mikasa, and the intelligent Armin.

As of December 2019, the total number of comics (print and e-book) published worldwide has exceeded 140 million, making it a beloved work that has won numerous manga awards. It has also been made into a TV anime, and in 2015, it was made into a live-action movie (part 1 and part 2) starring Haruma Miura, and a live-action movie in Hollywood has also been announced.

When I saw the Tokyo performance, I was overwhelmed by the power of the stage. I thought that the musical was the perfect way to express the work “Attack on Titan.” The actors' actions and songs have made it a new “Attack on Titan” that is different from both the original manga and the anime. It was a wonderful production, so I can't wait for everyone in New York to see it. I hope you'll look forward to the start of the performances.
