This exhibition will express the idea of a peaceful and happy world being created by connecting “Peace,” one of the themes of Nagami's work, with “Pieces” (pieces of tiles) and gathering various pieces together, as “pieces of happiness” through illustrations and mosaic works. In the first half of the exhibition, Nagami will display his illustrations of “Rascal the Raccoon,” which he draws for Nippon Animation, and tile works using these designs. In the second half of the exhibition, Nagami's original works and works by other mosaic artists will be on display.

Natsuko Nagami and Toshimi Iwai, Director

On Friday, May 31st, ahead of the “Natsuko Nagami and Mosaic Exhibition” which begins the following Saturday, June 1st, a press conference will be held by artist Natsuko Nagami and museum director Toshimi Iwai.

The press conference was held in a friendly atmosphere with over 10 reporters viewing the exhibits and asking Nagami questions. Nagami said, “When I first heard about the exhibition from Tajimi City, I couldn't find a clear connection between the mosaic tiles and my work.” He then commented, “At the beginning of this year, I visited Tajimi City and saw the tiles and works at the museum. As I was finding tile decorations around the city, the idea of collaborating with my own work came to me.” He seemed to be fascinated by Tajimi City's tiles, and commented, “I hope everyone will enjoy the new combination of Rascal and mosaics.”

Photo Spot

Director Iwai commented with joy about the opening of the exhibition, “The first half of the exhibition[Rascal and Pieces of Happiness]will begin on June 1st. In order to hold this exhibition, Nagami came to Tajimi to experience the charm of mosaic tiles, and we were able to create a collaborative work of Rascal's illustrations and tiles for this exhibition.” He said that he had seen Nagami's work a little early, and gave his stamp of approval, saying, “When I saw the works at the exhibition venue, I was able to immerse myself in Nagami's worldview. I think you will be able to feel the same.” He sent a message to visitors who will be coming to the exhibition, saying, “There will also be a photo spot at the exhibition venue. I think you will be able to become one with Nagami's work, so please be sure to experience it when you come to the venue.”

On the following day, June 1st (Saturday), a signing session with author Nagami Natsuko was held to commemorate the opening of the special exhibit “Rascal and Pieces of Happiness” as part of the “Natsuko Nagami and Mosaic Exhibition.”

About 50 people, including Rascal fans and families with children, attended the autograph session and enjoyed the Rascal and mosaic tile exhibition.

Nagami, who visited the museum on the first day of the opening, said with shining eyes, “I left the preparation for the exhibition to the museum, so when I entered the exhibition room I was honestly surprised and happy, saying 'Wow, it's amazing!'” After the autograph signing session was over, he said, “The distance to the audience was closer than at a normal solo exhibition, and I received a lot of different opinions. Listening to my fans' stories gave me new ideas for how to use tiles, etc. Until now I hadn't really thought about creating works using tiles, but this exhibition has made me want to try more. I've been able to do a lot of things I want to do in the future, so I hope you'll look forward to the later “Resonance with Mosaic Artists”!” It seems that interacting with fans has given him new inspiration.

Furthermore, Tajimi Mayor Takagi Takayuki, who came to inspect the opening day of the special exhibition, expressed his delight at the exhibition, saying, “It is an honor to be able to hold Nagami's exhibition at Tajimi's Mosaic Tile Museum. The original connection began when a Tajimi city employee fell in love with Nagami's illustrations and asked Nippon Animation to create an exhibition. I believe that the work that Nagami created this time shows new possibilities for tiles. This time it is a fusion of illustrations and tiles, but I think it would also be interesting to decorate family photos with tiles. I hope that this exhibition will encourage more people to become interested in tiles and Tajimi city.”

A parent who brought their child to the autograph session said with a smile, “We love Nagami's illustrations, and we never thought we'd get an autograph like this. The atmosphere at the exhibition hall was also really good, so we're glad we came. Our daughters were so happy, we even bought the picture book.” A couple who love Rascal expressed their gratitude, saying, “We love Rascal, so we were looking forward to this exhibition. It's rare to see an exhibition like this in our hometown, so we're really grateful.” A pair of women in their 20s seemed to have enjoyed the exhibition, saying, “We came here without knowing there was an exhibition, so we were lucky to see it. It was really cute and the atmosphere was great. We're going to buy some postcards after this!”

On July 13th (Sat) and 14th (Sun), there will be a special event called “Create a world where Rascal lives with tiles!” where you can create your own world where Rascal lives by placing the illustrations that Natsuko Nagami created for this exhibition on a special panel and decorating it with mosaic tiles!
