Founder of Orange studio talks about CG in anime

The use of CG animation in anime is a very controversial topic among fans, some praise it, while others prefer traditional 2D animation. But the reality is that CG animation has been used for many years, in 1983 the anime film Golgo 13: The Professional was the first to use this animation method.

Among the animation studios that use CG, one that stands out for its animation is the studio Orange. Founded in 2004, the studio has already animated animes such as Trigun Stampede, Land of the Lustrous, Beastars It is Godzilla Singular Point. In a recent interview with the Comic Nataliethe founder of the studio, Eiji Onomotorevealed that he didn't always have confidence in creating a studio focused solely on computer-generated animation.

At that time, the demand for CG in the anime industry was growing as a way to fill gaps that were difficult to address with traditional animation. The situation was so unstable that I honestly wasn't sure if a CG-only production company could continue to generate profits.

Onomoto later addressed the importance of anime Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) to the studio Orange.

As the main contractor, more people got to know Orange. This project is still considered one of our main works. From a creator's perspective, it was a significant milestone in making CG more accepted by anime fans. Previously, we had positive feedback with robots, but 'Land of the Lustrous' showed that CG characters could be adopted. Since then, we have continually improved our quality and varied our expressions, all building on the foundation established by 'Land of the Lustrous'.
