At the Reddit anime fans started an interesting discussion about those animes that they initially put off, but over time they came to love.

The discussion revealed a variety of reasons why anime fans initially rejected certain anime, from prejudices about the genre or art style to misunderstandings about the plot or characters. However, what is most striking is how these same animes managed to win the hearts of anime fans who decided to give them a chance.

The change of heart was described by many as an eye-opening experience, where initial perceptions were challenged and replaced by a deeper appreciation for the unique qualities of each series. Users have highlighted the importance of keeping an open mind and being willing to revise your preconceived opinions, as this can lead to surprising discoveries and a greater appreciation of the vast and diverse world of anime.

  • fairy tail. I used to make fun of this series because of the ridiculousness of the characters, but now I'm watching it again for the fifth time
  • Date a Live. I thought it was a regular fanservice anime 4 years ago. It wasn't entirely fanservice. But the dark history is not mentioned anywhere. It starts with a cute tone, darkening towards the later arches. I'm tired of waiting for the next season, I read your light novels.
  • It's funny, since you cited this as an example, but this happened to me with Shingeki no Kyojin. I was so tired of the time gaps between seasons that I gave up on the series entirely, but as a complete series it's much better. Waiting 4 years to sit in a forest and watch several episodes (S1-S2) took away my joy of weekly binge-watching, but if you can sit down and watch it from start to finish, season 2 isn't so ridiculously slow how much it was for me in 2017.
  • Initial D, I used to say that an anime about racing sounded like crap… until I saw it. It's already in my top 10.
  • At Animax, I tended to avoid series supposedly aimed at girls, like K-ON, Lucky Star, Maid-Samaor even slice-of-life series like Little Busters. Suffice to say, I have rectified these errors.
  • Re:ZeroI'm glad I gave it a second chance.
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba. Zenitsu bothered me a lot, but when I got to the Infinite Train I stopped caring. I haven't seen the Blacksmith Village arc yet, but so far these are simple, elegant shounen times, and I like it!
  • I let the haters of Sword Art Online influenced me for a few years. I'm happy to enjoy it again.
  • For me it was GintamaI've tried watching it about 5-7 times and I always stop between the tenth and twentieth episode because I found it very boring, the last time I tried (with more shounen anime on my mind) I finally ended up liking it.
  • The truth is that I hated the first season of Shingeki no Kyojin and I left it because when it came out everyone praised it. But about 5 years later I gave it another chance and it didn't disappoint. I still think the first season is the weakest.
  • I can't emphasize this enough, but the longer/crazier a title is, the more likely it is to be better. Watch 100 Girlfriend's. That in itself should be a joke and a positive sign, but no. It's a surprisingly deep story that really shows how unique each woman/man is and that loving them is probably as unique as they are. Plus, it's hilarious.
  • I'm A Villainness, so I'm Taming the Last Boss. I stopped when it was starting to get interesting, but I came back months later and enjoyed it. It has substantial flaws in pacing due to the way the studio adapted one volume into four episodes. But I like.
  • Previously I wasn't really into hardcore action, like Berserk, Claymore, Black Bullet, etc., but I started liking the fight scenes more and more and now it's like “our thing” to watch when my boyfriend and I want to watch anime together. Alone, I still prefer adventure and fantasy (and romance, I'm not going to lie: I go crazy with Cherry Magic It is A Sign of Affection).
  • I didn't like Don't Toy with Me Miss Nagatoro because the first few episodes left me with a bad feeling. But honestly, after watching more, it's a pretty solid series. It's not amazing, but it's a lot of fun when the characters develop a little.
  • For a long time I assumed that Re:Zero it was some kind of generic isekai harem hentaibait and I didn't have any strong feelings about it, anyway, it's now my favorite anime.
  • Fist of the North Star.
  • JoJo's Bizarre AdventureI thought it was too ridiculous for my taste, now look at me.
  • Sousou at FrierenI used to say it was overrated and not great and all, but now it's a masterpiece to me.
  • It's not that I didn't like it, but I preferred it Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to the 2003 anime when he was younger. In some ways, I now prefer the old one. He gets a lot of hate. FMAB is not as perfect an adaptation as it seems.
  • My Hero Academia…I hated it because of the fandom and stuff, but after I got past the 5 episodes I was hooked.
  • I didn't like mecha until Code Geass, although the mecha part is not essential at all, it changed my perception. Also Spirited Away. I thought it was an overrated children's film because it was Japanese. But my best friend told me to give it a chance, and the truth is that I really liked it.
  • Bleach. I watched a few episodes and thought, “This is fun, but what the hell is this? But a few years later I started watching it again and got to the Soul Society arc and that's when it got amazing.
